Free course from VIU: Essentials of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection

Dear valued partner,

We are excited to let you know about a new educational opportunity that Vancouver Island University (VIU) faculty have developed in partnership with faculty from the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). We are piloting a new microcredential in Essentials of Natural Resource and Environmental Protection, delivered through BCIT, which will be offered for FREE to applicants who are committed to completing the full program and providing feedback afterwards.

Who should consider signing up?
Anyone with an interest in exploring career pathways in natural resource management or environmental protection is invited to apply. For example, those interested in working in parks, eco-tourism operations, conservation, green energy, mining, forestry, agriculture, fisheries and wildlife. This includes high school students who meet the requirements.

Students will be introduced to the basic terminology used in the natural resources sector, as well as the different types of natural resources in Canada and who manages and protects them. See this flyer for more details.

Timeline
The program runs February 1 to March 18, 2021. Classes will be live streamed on Mondays and Thursdays from 6-8 pm, with additional asynchronous content. To fully benefit from this program, participants are encouraged to attend as many of the lectures as they can.

Additional perks
Upon successful completion of this program, participants receive four unassigned credits at VIU. The microcredential provides an introduction to natural resource protection that could lead to additional training at VIU such as:

  • Resource Management Technology Officer,
  • courses offered through our Natural Resource Extension Program,
  • and the Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology diploma program.

Please share with your colleagues and anyone you think might be interested. If you are interested in applying, please fill out this application form. Applications are due by January 22, 2021.
